    老子曰:智者的低语 The Dao Speaks------

    道可道,非常道。名可名,非常名。无,名天地之始;有,名万物之母。
    The Dao encompasses the principles of the myriad things. It is formless, silent, has no body, and is eternal and unchanging. This principle cannot be clearly explained through languages. In the beginning, there were no material bodies or even any shapes or forms. This state we call "Nothingness". Nothingness is the underlying substance of the Dao, the original source of the universe.
    上善若水。水善利万物而不争,处众人之所恶,故几于道。居善地,心善渊,与善仁,言善信,政善治,事善能,动善时。夫唯不争:故无尤。
    A virtuous person is like water. It has three special characteristics: One, it nurtures the myriad things. Two, it is naturally pliant---flowing where nature takes it. Three, it resides in lowly places despised by people. Water resides in lowly places. The virtuous person places himself below others. Water is deep and still. The virtuous perosn is profound and calm. Water provides for the myriad things. Virtuous people give of themselves with no expectation of reward. Water provides an accurate reflection of things. Virtuous people are honest and undeceiving in both words and deeds. Water is pliant, taking on all kinds of shapes. People should learn from water\'s noncontentious nature. By benefiting the world and being humble, you can come closer to the Dao.
    曲则全,枉则直,洼则盈,敝则新,少则得,多则惑。是以圣人抱一为天下式。 To bend is to stay whole; To flounder is to remain upright; To lie low is to be filled up; Only the old can be renewed. Therefore, the sage preserves the Dao, becoming a model for all the world.
    知人者智,自知者明。胜人者力,自胜者强。知足者富,强行者志。
    Understanding the good and the bad in other people is merely intelligence, While understanding one\'s own nature is true enlightenment, To be able to overcome others is to have power, But to be able to overcome oneself is to have real strength, To be content without demanding too much is to be blessed with riches.
    天下万物生于有,而有生于无。反者道之动:弱者到之用。
    The Dao moves in cycles over and over, flowing unceasingly, and in this way, gives rise to the endless flourishing of life. The function of the Dao is weak and humble. The myriad things under heaven are generated from Being. And Being arises from Nothing. Nothing is the substance of the Dao, and Being is its function. In order to achieve the realm of the Dao, we must first reconcile ourselves with non-action, not engaging in affairs of the world, non-intellectualizing, no-knowledge, no-desires, egolessness, and selflessness.
    道生一,一生二,二生三,三生万物。万物负阴而抱阳,冲气以为和。
    The Dao is the underlying principle behind the creation of the myriad things. The order of the process giving rise to the myriad things began with the Dao producing a kind of generative force.
    This force gave rise to the two forces of the Yin and Yang.
    The interaction of the Yin and Yang led to a state of dynamic balance…From which the myriad things issued forth.
    The myriad things have their backs to the Yin and face the Yang. Through the blending of the Yin and Yang, a new harmony is created.
    知者不言,言者不知。
    A wise person understands the subtlety and mystery of the Dao and so cautiously puts it into practice, not daring to be too talkative. Those who prattle on and on understand nothing about the Dao.
    By being humble and untroubled, we control our won circumstances, and no one else can make or break us.
    治大国,若烹小鲜。
    Governing a large country is like frying a small fish, you can’t turn it over too often. If turned over too many times, the fish will fall apart.
    By governing through tranquility and non-action, the gods and spirits remain in their proper places. So the spirits do not harm people.
    人之生也柔弱,其死也坚强。草木之生也柔弱,其死也枯槁。故坚强者死之徒,柔弱者生使徒。
    When people are alive, their bodies are tender and soft. When dead, they become stiff and hard. Plants are also tender and supple when alive, only to become dry and brittle when they die.
    Stiff and hard things belong to the realm of the dead, while the tender and soft belong to the realm of the living.
    是以兵强则灭,木强则折。强大处下,柔弱处上。
    Therefore, a strong army will end up a dead army. Like a strong tree…that gets hacked down. The strong shall be reduced to a lowly position while the weak shall be raised up.
    When the gale-force winds come, it is always the big tall trees that get blown over, while the pliant little grass just sways back and forth. That weakness overcomes strength seems obvious.
    天下莫柔弱于水,而攻坚强者莫之能胜,以其无以易之。弱之胜强,柔之胜刚,天下莫不知,莫能行。
    Nothing is more pliant than water. And nothing can attack hard and strong things better. The weak overcomes the strong, the soft overcomes the hard. Everyone knows this, but no one is able to put it into practice. So the sage says, “Only the person who can shoulder the disgraces and disasters of a country is fit to be its leader.”
    信言不美,美言不信。善者不辩,辩者不善。知者不博,博者不知。
    True words are not pleasant to hear, words that are pleasant to hear are not true.
    A good person does not argue; an argumentative person is not good.
    A wise person understands that the great Dao of the universe lies within one’s own heart and that it isn’t necessary to run around in search of it.
